You can complete an online drivers license renewal in North Carolina if you meet all DMV requirements. If your license does expire before that time, it is important that you notify the North Carolina DMV and that you keep your military orders that station you outside of the state on your person at all times if you intend to continue to operate motor vehicles. If you do not take care of your expired drivers license prior to deployment, your license will still be valid until 60 days after the date that you are released from active duty. Active duty military personnel will have the opportunity to renew their drivers license early prior to being deployed. While the license issued will be a temporary one, it will allow you to continue to legally operate a motor vehicle until you are able to visit your local North Carolina DMV.

When learning how to renew drivers license documents, you can contact the DMV and request a renewal by mail if you are temporarily residing out of the state during the renewal period. Acceptable documents include a certified marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order that details the change of name. If you have changed your name since your last drivers license renewal, you will also be required to provide acceptable proof of that name change. In some cases, you may be required to pass an additional driving skills test, at the discretion of the examiner.
In order to complete any required renewal tests, you must pay the appropriate fees and pass both a vision and traffic sign test as well as have a new photo taken. You can renew a drivers license at any North Carolina DMV location by providing your drivers license or another proof of identity, your Social Security card and, if applying for a REAL ID drivers license, additional documentation that further proves your identity. You can do this task six months before the date of expiration, but the DMV also allows you to renew up to two years after the expiration date. Failing to request a DMV license renewal will not only revoke your legal ability to operate a motor vehicle, but you may also be required to take additional testing once you do renew your drivers license. You may begin the process for renewing a drivers license in North Carolina up to six months prior to the expiration of your current drivers license.
